A Hard Rock / Progressive Rock band from Hungary.|Skorpió (Scorpion in Hungarian) was formed in 1973.
The band members were well known musicians from other famous Hungarian bands:|- Frenreisz Károly: vocals & bass in Locomotiv GT|- Szűcs Antal Gábor: vocals & guitars in Hungária|- Fekete Gábor: drums in Hungária|- Papp Gyula: organ in Mini.
Originally Frenreisz wanted an Emerson, Lake & Palmer type trio formation, but later he decided to include a gitarist. The band’s first album, “A rohanás” was released in 1974. They made several radio and TV appearances. The band members also played on the popular Zalatnay Sarolta’s album. The second Skorpió album, “Ünnepnap” was released in 1976.
Skorpió was one of the best Hungarian bands of the 1970’s. The members demonstrated great technicality of instrument playing on their albums, and their live shows were very popular and successful. Their instrumentation included: Hammond A-100 organ, Hohner Mellotron, Roland synthesizer, Fender Precision Bass Guitar, Gibson Les Paul and SG gitár, Ludwig glass drums, and Paiste cymbals. Their lyrics were often criticized.
In 1976 Fekete Gábor left for England, and later moved to the USA. His replacement was Németh Gábor from the band Apostol. They released “Kelj fel!” in 1977 and “Gyere velem!” in 1978.
On April 4, 1979 Skorpió split up. Frenreisz Károly formed “Új Skorpió” (New Scorpion) with Tátrai Tibor guitarist from Generál, and with Papp Tamás, drummer from Korál. The rest of the former members, Szűcs Antal Gábor, Németh Gábor és Papp Gyula formed Dinamit with the addition of Németh Alajos on bass and Vikidál Gyula, vocals.
Új Skorpió, after releasing two album and playing numerous live shows, split up in 1983. Tátrai Tibor went to play in Hobo Blues Band.
Frenreisz Károly, Szűcs Antal Gábor, Papp Tamás and Pálvölgyi Géza (keyboards) re-formed Skorpió in 1985. They released two albums during 1985-93.
Notes:|The band was seeking Tátrai as a band member back in 1973, however Tátrai grabbed a chance to go on a live tour in Australia as a member of Syrius.|Skorpió was also interested, unsuccessfully, in signing up singer Révész Sándor for the original and later for the Új Skorpió bands. The band performed once with Révész Sándor on a duet on Zalatnay Sarolta’s English album, recorded in Prague in 1973.
